Climbing Wattle (Senegalia pennata)

Climbing Wattle, botanical name: Senegalia pennata, is a legume species shrub or small tropical tree which grows mostly in South and Southeast Asia. The plant can extend up to 5 meters in height, they are thorny and leaves are bipinnate with linear-oblong and glabrous pinnules.

It also bears yellowish flowers are terminal panicles with globose heads.

It is a very useful plant with edible leaves.

  • Thadou/Kuki  : Khangkhuh
  • Mizo          : Khanghu
  • Hmar              : Khanghmuk
  • Rongmei : Khang-ruan

Personal Recipe :

1. Chop tender shoots finely

2. Roast some green chilies and grind it

3. Add a little bit of Sathu (fermented Pork/Meat)

4. Add salt and a pinch of Soda.

5. Add the chopped shoots and stir.

Uses :

In India, North Eastern States like Mizoram and Manipur are well acquainted with this plant and used it as a main

ingredients for their indigenous cuisines.

It is usually prepared as Kang-gou(fried) and also prepared as Eromba. The edible shoots are picked up before they become tough and thorny. They are also used in soups, curries, omelettes, etc.

Boiled leaves are quite bitter in taste, they can also be eaten raw or prepared as chutneys or hmarchadeng/morokmetpa
