
Chayote or commonly known as Mirliton Squash (scientific name Sechium edule) belongs to the Gourd family, Cucurbitaceae. It is an edible plant with tuberous rootstock and heart-shaped leaves.

The fruit is rough and resembles the shape of a pear. Single seed and fleshy, there are of many varieties differing in color usually whitish and green, and shapes. Although most people are familiar only with the fruit being edible, the roots, stems, and leaves are also edible too.
The plant can be grown on the ground but needed support as they are climbers, they can climb on any nearby structures. The fruits are heavy and hang from the stem.

Edible Uses :
- The fruit can be eaten raw or steamed.
- The fruit can be boiled or cooked with other vegetables.
- Boiled fruit can also be smashed and eaten as they resemble the texture of potatoes.
- Matured fruit are also cut and can be a substitute for potatoes.
- The young stems and leaves can also be cooked as a vegetable.
- Stems can also be fried

Names :
In India and Nepal, the plant and fruit are called ishkus (इस्कुस in Nepali), probably derived from the word squash. Its shoots, fruit, and roots are widely used for different varieties of curries.
